Best time to visit?

If you like warm weather, from January to April. We are never too cold though.

Must try local dishes?

Feijoada (a black beans based meal)

Churrascaria (a meat buffet brought to you in your table)

Your city's most popular tourist spot?

There are many but Christ the redeemer and Sugar loaf are pretty popular.

Any favorite local place or spot you would recommend to a visitor in your city?

Any of the street bars, also called "botequim" are a very local way of enjoying free time. Having finger food or "petiscos" with beer is a must, preferably while watching a local football match. Watch how we Cariocas go crazy about our footballs clubs.

Another local place to visit is Lapa. This is an old neighborhood where the bohemians used to hang out in the 50s and 60s and it's live again. Carioca da Gema is a nice place to go and enjoy real Samba music in Lapa, but the options are plenty. Pedra do Sal on Monday nights is also nice for a round of Samba.

Safety Precautions/Reminders/tips for travelers?

As in any big city you should be aware of pick pocket and leaving your valuables unattended. If you are in the touristic areas, you should be just fine as long as you don't flash expensive clothing and jewelry around as well as being aware of your surroundings before using latest smartphones.
